Created by the damming of the Blackwater and Roanoke Rivers in 1966, Smith Mountain Lake encompasses 20,600 acres of excellent quality water and includes 500 miles of pristine shoreline. The 816-foot tall dam, owned and operated by American Electric Power, is used to generate electricity. The typical water level is 795 feet with the deepest point on the lake at 250 feet.
Smith Mountain Lake State Park
Open to the public since 1983, the Smith Mountain Lake State Park has long been a favorite spot of residents and visitors. Its 1,248 acres extend over 16 miles along the beautiful shoreline of Smith Mountain Lake.
